Three young local artists have received a financial boost from Gallery in the Grove to pursue their post-secondary studies this fall.

The Gallery awarded $1,000 to each of the recent high school graduates, maintaining a local arts tradition that began almost 40 years ago.

Northern Collegiate grad Laneigh Shirley will attend Ryerson University in Toronto to study film and image arts.

Northern’s Jillian Bridgman is heading to the University of Waterloo to study architecture.

And Kaitlyn Medeiros, who attended St. Patrick’s High School, is off to Western University in London to begin a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

Because of the pandemic, the gallery was unable to hold a reception for this year’s winners. But more about each of the students can be found at the galleryinthegrove.com.

The winners were chosen by local arts teachers and “represent a broad range of disciplines within the arts,” the gallery said in a release. “We wish them well in their endeavours.”

The volunteer-run and non-profit Gallery is located upstairs at the Faethorne House in Bright’s Grove.

It has awarded $140,000 in scholarships to local students since 1982, with recent financial support from Kelgor and the Bright’s Grove Optimists.
