Looking for Amish man named Andy

Sir: My wife and I recently travelled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago on Amtrak's "South-West Chief," and in the course of our journey we met an Amish couple from a community near Sarnia.

The couple was returning from Mexico where they had taken their daughter to receive medical attention. We know the daughter to be in her forties.

They had a connection to make in Chicago for further travel to Port Huron, whence they were to be collected. Given Amtrak's dubious reputation for timekeeping, it was possibly a surprise that they would make their connection, when our train arrived in Chicago after two days travel on time to the minute.

The Amish gentleman - Andy - asked me to call a friend, Glen Irvine, to let him know they would make the connection and would be arriving in Port Huron that night, so that Mr. Irvine could "come over" to pick them up.

Andy gave me the phone number and $3 for the call. He insisted that I take the money.

I tried the number many, many times. It was either out of order or off the hook. I now have Andy's money, and didn't discharge my responsibilities to him, something which plagues me.

If I could contact Andy directly I would be enormously grateful.

With best wishes,

Peter Houlding

Editor’s note: Andy, if you’re out there, contact me at 519-491-5532 or george.mathewson@thesarniajournal and I’ll connect you with Peter.

Gouged by taxes, greedy banks

Sir: Paying more money in taxes than any Canadian can afford has become the status quo and the excuse for the privilege of living in Canada.

This is a very sad fact.  However, high taxes are not the only issue we have to deal with. Can any politician explain to all of us how and why the banks have been allowed to become one of the richest commodities in Canada, getting there by riding on the coat tails of Canadian citizens? Who let this happen?

We are being gouged by the banking institutions for services rendered, and with the current low interest rates we are in turn financially cheated.

The banks are making exorbitant, record profits at our expense. Their executives are getting richer while us ordinary, hard-working Canadians, which of course includes their own employees, are barely keeping afloat.  Such greed should never be tolerated in any society.

I have not heard one mention from any of our political candidates that this is a huge problem for us already heavily taxed Canadians.

What gives? Would any of you politicians care to enlighten us?

Standing against abortion

Sir: At 9:37 a.m. yesterday our future Prime Minister was assassinated.

At 9:43 a.m. the cure for cancer was thrown out in the trash.

At 9:52 a.m. an advocate so hydro costs would be cut in half was squashed.

At 10:05 a.m. the hope for Alzheimer’s patients was flushed down the drain.

At 10:11 a.m. a brilliant and caring teacher was cut into pieces.

At 10:19 a.m. a chance for a new father to show love and devotion was taken from him.

At 10:24 a.m. the inventor of a reliable AIDS vaccine was poisoned.

At 10:36 a.m. a mother was pressured to kill her first born, a son.

These eight people, a mere drop in the bucket, represent the number of documented abortions that happen in Canada in one hour. These potentials for greatness were never given a voice. Their rights were taken from them. Maybe one of these could have been your future grandchild. Your favourite teacher. Your friendly neighbour. Your trusted co-worker.

If this made you stop and think, why not take a stand against abortion? The Sarnia location for the National Life Chain will be held on Oct. 4 at London Road at Murphy, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more, please visit lifechain.net.

Thanks to all for the car show

Sir: We at The Salvation Army would like to extend our gratitude and thanks to the organizers, volunteers, and participants of the annual Car Show on Rutherglen Close that took place on Saturday, Sept. 19.

We would like to express appreciation to Susan Platt, our Community and Family Services Coordinator, and her team of volunteers from Community and Family Services and our church family.

We would also like to thank those who participated in and attended the Car Show and the residents of Rutherglen Close. Your support is very meaningful.

And most of all, we would like to thank Dan and Cheryl Moore. Dan is the man who had the vision for the Car Show and the hardest working individual behind it.

Again, thanks to all who took part in and supported the Car Show for The Salvation Army. The monies raised stay here in our community and help us help others.

God bless.
