Re: Sarnia’s waterfront masterplan

I hold that much of what’s proposed in the Waterfront Master Plan should not be implemented.

Some questions that Councillors should consider before deciding on the Capital Budgets for 2023, and beyond, are:

Are each of the changes proposed in the WMP justifiable? What is wrong with the waterfront, as it is now? Should Council direct staff to provide a report documenting what capital maintenance, with estimated costs, will be necessary for the existing waterfront, over the coming years?

What is the economic case for the “Market”? Why should Sarnians’ taxes fund it? Why was its proposed location switched, at the last minute, in the final report, from the bottom of George to Lochiel without explanation and with no feedback being sought from the public?

Should the proposed open air ice track, subject to icy winds from the river, be built given that the Dow rink of the 1970’s was abandoned by the City?

What exactly are the current problems with the Agora and can/should some of these be addressed?

Finally, Council should have the WMP critiqued by a qualified third party, not previously involved, before finalizing and approving its future scope.
