Repairs to the leaky slate roof at the Lawrence House have been postpones to the spring.

A new slate roof was installed in the 1980s on the downtown arts centre, which was built by lumber baron William Lawrence in 1892.

But the wrong kind of nails were used and some of the stone shingles have come loose and broken off.

A contract was awarded in September to London-based Hanenburg Roofing, whose bid of $93,000 to repair the roof was by far the lowest from three contractors.

But the company, which intends to reuse as many of the slates as possible, is backed up and the city has agreed to the rescheduling.

The roof will be checked before winter, however, to ensure it’s waterproof and programs at the arts centre aren’t impacted by the delay.
