Three years after mothballing the coal-fired power station near Courtright, Ontario Power Generation announced last week it was decommissioning the plant.

Officials had held out hope LGS might be retrofitted to burn natural gas or biomass and bring back some of 450 high-paying jobs it once boasted.

But Ontario has been producing so much power it’s exporting some of it at heavily discounted prices.

So the buildings will be razed next year and the site repurposed, putting the final 24 employees out of work, OPG said.
