Lambton College has received recognition as one of the top research colleges in Canada.

The Sarnia-based institution was ranked first in Ontario and third in the nation by Research Infosource Inc., which compiles an annual list of Canada’s top 50 research colleges.

Lambton had a 32.7% increase in internal and external research revenue last year, to just over $7 million.

The investment helped it surpass George Brown College, Sheridan College and Niagara College, previous Ontario front-runners.

"Lambton College has a great story to tell," said Ron Freedman, CEO of Research Infosource, noting the college has moved up 14 spots in the ranking in just three years.

“These numbers are reflective of the expanding projects and partnerships being completed at Lambton College and solidifies their position as a leader in applied research and development.”

Mehdi Sheikhzadeh, Dean of Applied Research and Innovation at Lambton, said strong collaboration with government and private organizations has been the key to the college’s success.

The collaborations provide students and faculty with advanced training opportunities while helping its business partners achieve their goals, he said.

This new ranking has Lambton College leading the country for the number of paid research students at a medium-sized college.

Lambton’s rising stock as a research institution has resulted in multiple achievements this year, including Gold Honours for Innovation from Colleges and Institutes Canada, and an Outstanding Business Award from the Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce.

Its Applied Research Department was formed in 2007 and since then has received more than $20 million in federal and provincial funding.

Last year, Lambton carried out 104 projects involving 99 research students, 34 faculty and staff researchers, and 23 co-op placements.
