It happens each December — the hospital’s emergency department swells up with twice as many people as usual just as flu spreads and doctors are reducing opening hours.

Over the holidays, more than 300 patients a day will visit the emergency departments (ED) in Sarnia and Petrolia, Bluewater Health says.

As it prepares for that surge, it’s also telling residents what they can do to avoid a long wait in a crowded room this Christmas.

“Always call 911 right away if you or someone close to you is experiencing chest pain, stroke symptoms or an acute medical emergency,” said Dr. Chris Borek, Medical Director of Emergency Medicine.

The ED is there for the sickest people providing treatment for urgent illnesses and injuries in 24 hours a day, he added.

“That said, there are a few things people can do ahead of time to care for themselves and prevent the need for an unwanted hospital visit over the holidays.”

They include:

* Call your family doctor or nurse practitioner first. They know your history and are the best for non-emergencies likes colds and urinary tract infections.

* Refill prescriptions before the holidays. If you run out over the holidays, contact your pharmacist and ask about refills.

* Get a flu shot, to protect you and the people around you.

* Call Telehealth Ontario. It’s a free, confidential service that provides health advice or information. A Registered Nurse will take your call 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-866-797-0000.
