A collision between a gravel truck and some escaped horses on May 16 ended badly for the driver and animals.

The tractor-trailer was westbound on Churchill Line near Telfer Road around 4:20 a.m. when it struck three of four horses that had escaped from a farm.

The truck veered off the road, crashed through fences and hit a utility pole, causing a power outage in the area.

The driver, 56, was taken to hospital with injuries that were not life threatening, Sarnia Police said.

One horse died immediately and two others were put down after being examined by a veterinarian.

The fourth horse made it home safely, police said.
