Haven’t yet found a high-dose flu shot this fall? You can probably fuggedaboutit.

With the supply of high-dose vaccine for seniors largely gone local health officials are recommending a regular flu shot instead.

“Ontario has received basically all of the high-dose they’ve been able to order, and they’ve distributed all that now,” said Crystal Palleschi, health protection supervisor at Lambton Public Health.

Ontario provides two types of flu shots. The standard dose protects against A and B influenza strains and is recommended for residents ages six-months to 64 years old. The boosted version has better protection again A-strain, to which seniors are at increased risk.

“Both the high dose and the low dose are effective and they both protect against the flu,” said Palleschi. “And the most important thing is to be vaccinated.”

Demand for flu shots is high this year and all Lambton Public Health clinic appointments are fully booked.

Even finding the standard flu vaccine at pharmacies and doctor offices has been difficult, many residents say.
