Conservative incumbent Marilyn Gladu handily retained her seat in Sarnia-Lambton Monday night, unofficially winning nearly 50% of the vote.

A horserace predicted by some between Gladu and NDP candidate Adam Kilner did not materialize as Gladu took an early lead and never looked back.

The earliest polls to report were from the City of Sarnia where Gladu consistently earned triple the votes of her nearest opponent.

Anticipating that her base in rural Lambton would come through for her, Gladu announced to reporters about an hour after the polls closed that she was honoured to serve as Sarnia-Lambton’s MP again.

“I look forward to being a strong voice in Ottawa and I look forward to going back,” she said.

The 2019 election didn’t bring the “strong Conservative government we were looking for but you know already that I work well from across the aisle,” said Gladu.

The NDP’s Kilner arrived at Gladu’s celebration to concede at the Royal Canadian Legion after finishing the night a distant second with about 22% of the vote.

The local campaign was far more friendly than the national one, Kilner said.  “I have deep respect for all the candidates who ran.

“Things don’t always go the way you want but the experience has been rich for me.”

At the Liberal camp, a couple of dozen supporters joined first-time candidate Carmen Lemieux at The Bay Waterfront Grill.  The mood was decidedly quiet but Lemieux said her team worked hard and couldn’t have done anything more.

She said she’s happy to see Justin Trudeau’s Liberals back in power, although this time with a minority.

“I think voters are telling us they want to see us govern with more collaboration,” Lemieux said. “It’s their way of bringing in electoral reform.”
