Throwing things on the ice at a hockey game is generally frowned upon.

But once a year it’s actually encouraged at a Sarnia Sting game.

The annual Teddy Bear Toss will return for its 19th season when the Sting host the Niagara Ice Dogs on Dec. 4.

As the tradition goes, when the Sting net their first goal of the night fans respond with a shower of stuffed animals, littering the ice with a toy bonanza.

After the teddies are gathered up they’re distributed to local families through organizations like the Women’s Interval Home, Salvation Army and the Inn of the Good Shepherd, among others.

Sponsored by Lambton Ford, the family-friendly event has generated 50,700 toys since it’s inception in 1997.
