Arenas in Sarnia will soon have free WiFi.
Council has approved a $76,000-contract with Bluewater Regional Networks to provide wireless Internet access to large parts of Progressive Auto Sales Arena, Sarnia Arena, and Clearwater Arena over the next five years.
A staff report notes that free, public-access WiFi has become standard in North American arenas and is needed to attract sports tournament, fairs and festivals.
The local AAA Hockey Association also requires WiFi to meet its mandate of recording scores, penalties and other game statistics, it notes.
Once running, the service will accommodate 5,000 people at PASA, 3,000 at Sarnia Arena, and 1,500 at Clearwater, staff says.
