Firefighters respond to overnight high-rise fire

Sarnia Police say a woman who rushed to hospital from an early morning apartment tower fire has since died.

Nineteen firefighters from four Sarnia Fire Rescue stations responded to the high-rise in the 800 block of Trillium Park shortly after 3 a.m. and found smoke and flames in an upper storey apartment unit.

Firefighters quickly removed the woman from the unit and brought the fire under control, the department said.

She was taken by ambulance to Bluewater Health and later pronounced dead, police said. Investigators are in the process of notifying next of kin.

Sarnia Fire and Sarnia Police remain on the scene at this time.  The Ontario Fire Marshall has also been called in and the location has been secured as an active scene, police said.

The  extent of damage to the building is unknown at this time.
