Firefighter reduction

Published on

Sarnia is trimming its fire department.

Four full-time positions will be eliminated through attrition, reducing the number of firefighters on duty at any given in the city’s five stations to 23, including eight on standby.

The move does not impact the department’s commitment to safety, said Fire Chief John Kingyens.

He said the reduction is line with a provincial push to reduce the number and severity of fires through public education, inspections and enforcement.
