City Hall hopes that placing a section of Finch Drive on a “road diet” will reduce speeding and vehicle collisions in the area.

Council voted 8-1 recently to convert Finch into a two-lane road - with a single vehicle lane in each direction - between Wellington Street and London Road.

On-street parking will be maintained, with dedicated lanes for parking and cyclists, city staff said.

In addition, bicycle lanes will be added to Finch between Wellington and Fanshawe Drive.

A staff report noted the current four-lane configuration may be “overdesigned,” and that more collisions occur between the two major intersections than in comparable locations, despite a significantly lower average daily traffic count.
