Sarnia Police are praising the staff of city retail store for preventing an innocent customer from becoming a fraud victim.

A would-be scammer convinced the customer to remove cash from a bank and buy $2,500 worth of Google Play Cards at the store on July 7, police said.

Fortunately, an employee became suspicious and store staff helped the customer recognize what was truly happening, said Staff Sergeant Mike Van Sickle, who called their actions “diligent and compassionate.”

“Often we receive calls of people who have maxed out their credit cards or drained their accounts to buy gift cards under false pretenses, only to find out later they have been defrauded,” he said.

“Their effort prevented the target from making a big mistake.”
