A man synonymous with the growth, prosperity and independence of Point Edward has died. Dick Kirkland passed peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospice on Dec. 17. He was 83.

A man synonymous with the growth, prosperity and independence of Point Edward has died.

Dick Kirkland passed peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospice on Dec. 17. He was 83.

Kirkland began a distinguished career of public service that spanned more than 50 years, beginning as a member of the village school board, Point Edward councillor and a three-term mayor.

He worked on countless commissions and community groups, including the village fire department and fish hatchery, and as a Lambton County councillor.

Kirkland is also remembered as devoted family man who was liked and respected for his honesty and dedication.

He was also an accomplished athlete, being inducted into the Sarnia-Lambton sports hall of fame three times as a player and coach.

Kirkland served as mayor to the age of 80, stepping down in November of 2013 for health reasons.
