A new highrise is earmarked for Sarnia’s downtown.

London-based Tricar Group says the 12-storey, 126-unit apartment tower is planned for the vacant lot on the northwest corner of Christina Street and London Road.

Some approvals and zoning changes are pending, but Sarnia’s mayor says the company hopes to begin construction in May.

“It’s hard to keep something a secret when there are two big drilling rigs on the site,” Mike Bradley said, referring to soil sampling equipment that appeared on the busy corner.

It would be Tricar’s third building in Sarnia. The upscale Water’s Edge Apartments are located next door at 392 Front St.

The mayor said he suspects the towers will be similar, noting the Water’s Edge has a waiting list for potential tenants.

“You can be on the waterfront here for a lot less than probably most communities in the province,” he said.

The complex could mean another 200 to 300 people living in Sarnia’s downtown.

“The more people you have, the more it generates public interest,” Bradley said.

Tricar has more than 5,000 high-rise apartment rentals and luxury condominiums across southwestern Ontario, including those in Sarnia, London, Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Stratford, Burlington and Guelph.
