City council has shelved a proposal to send a $25,000 donation to help the people of Fort McMurray.

Mayor Mike Bradley proposed the gesture last week as a way to assist the fire-ravaged community and recognize the special relationship involving the local petrochemical industry and its workers and Alberta’s oilfields.

“We have shared the benefit of our natural resources as Canadians, and now, in the time of need of Albertans, it is time for us to stand up and show our support,” Bradley said.

But in a 5-3 vote councillors tabled the motion, with several preferring to wait and see what Lambton County council does about a donation.

Meanwhile, councillors in Point Edward approved a $5,000 donation for the relief effort.
