Sarnia Police are thanking the public after a record-breaking amount of food donations was collected through the Cops for Cans event held over the weekend.

"This year’s Cops for Cans results are in and we are happy to say the community has smashed last year’s numbers," Const. John Sottosanti said in a news release.

"Last year, 15,098 pounds of food was donated which was awesome but this year we collected 23,497 pounds of food. This is unbelievable!"

"On behalf of the Sarnia Police Service and the Inn of the Good Shepherd, we would like to thank the Real Canadian Superstore, Walmart, NoFrills Sarnia, and NoFrills Corunna for assisting us in this food drive," he added.

"Finally, we would like to thank our community for so such a great response in helping those who need it the most."
