City Parks and Recreation staff and the Baxter Park Neighbourhood Group are working on potential upgrades, which include a pavilion, bike racks, benches, lighting, signage and new trees.

Acrylic resurfacing and line painting on the existing basketball court is scheduled for late this spring.

The previous city council agreed to sell the park’s southern two acres — home to the former Kinsmen Community Centre — and create five building lots fronting Lakeshore Road.

But that decision was reversed last May, and since then, staff has been working with neighbours who fought to keep the land public.

The Kinsmen has registered to adopt the park. Donations for Baxter Park improvements can be made through the city at https://www.sarnia.ca/donations/
