Catholic school board issues staff layoff notices

Published on

The local Catholic school board has issued layoff notices to four elementary and three high school teachers.

Another 12.5 layoff notices were issued to early childhood educators, secretaries, child and youth workers, library and computer technicians, and board staff at the Catholic Education Centre.

The staffing changes were announced last week after the St. Clair Catholic District School Board approved a $113.4-million budget, which includes a surplus of $1.2 million.

“The changes in ministry funding and a slight decline in elementary enrolment have challenged the board to make difficult decisions,” says education director Deb Crawford.

Elementary enrolment is projected to decline 1.1% to 6,071 full-time equivalent students.
