Pedestrian-friendly street closures are continuing in downtown Sarnia on weekends until Sept. 5.

Christina Street is closed to vehicle traffic between George to Cromwell streets, starting Friday evening and continuing until 8 p.m. Sunday.

Sarnia council approved the move at the request of the Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce.

“We are responding to many people in the business community that said, can you assist us somehow to stimulate traffic and interest in our downtown core,” said CEO Allan Calvert.

Though most supported the move, a few businesses were opposed because street barricades limit nearby parking, Calvert said.

Some shoppers have been spoiled by front-door parking, but the goal is to get more people downtown overall, he said.

A noise bylaw exemption runs to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
