Canadian troops say ‘thanks’ for Christmas cards

A Canadian military task force stationed in the Ukraine has written to thank the people of Sarnia for sending the troops hundreds of personalized Christmas cards.

A Canadian military task force stationed in the Ukraine has written to thank the people of Sarnia for sending the troops hundreds of personalized Christmas cards.

About 50 Canadian soldiers gathered to read the cards at the Canadian Compound of the International Peacekeeping and Security Centre in Yavoriv, Ukraine.

The Sarnia cards, photos and artwork were distributed and displayed around the compound, Deputy Commander Jeff Day said in a letter to Mayor Mike Bradley.

“It was a pleasure to read and to watch the soldiers react to the well wishes and messages. It really felt like we were opening cards from friends and family, and it was a wonderful reminder of home,” he said.

The task force is two month into a six-month training deployment with the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Day said.

“Our mission is made easier knowing we have support from Canada, particularly the people of Sarnia.”
