Central United Church has been sold.

Kenn Poore, a broker with Cushman & Wakefield, declined to identify the buyer or the terms, but said: “The congregation is happy with the purchaser and the purchaser’s intended use.”

The deal doesn’t close until November, giving church members time to celebrate the 188th anniversary of the congregation.

The downtown landmark at George and Brock streets and its 1.6 acres was listed for $369,000 last summer.

The current church, built in 1888 with additions in 1925 and 1950, has 20,000-square-foot of space, two chapels, offices, a kitchen and gymnasium.

The National Trust for Canada estimates 9,000 churches and other religious spaces in Canada will be lost over the next decade due to shrinking congregations and rising maintenance costs.
