Sarnia has agreed to pay an Oakville company $19.3 million to complete the next phase of its sewer upgrade project.

CRS Tunnelling Inc. will drill a tunnel beneath the multiple train tracks at the CN Rail yard to connect a new sewer line from north of the tracks to a new pumping station planned for the intersection of Indian and Plank roads.

The “microtunnelling” will be done at a depth of 40-to-46 feet and the rail yard will be closely monitored to minimize impact on the tracks, according to a city staff report.

The work is very specialized, and the approved tender came in more than the $17.5 million originally estimated, staff said.
