The ‘Boys’ Home Run’ is celebrating its 30th anniversary this Father’s Day by going long.
Non-racing bike rides have been added of 20k and 40k to routes already available for walkers, runners and rollerbladers at the annual Huron House Boys’ Home fundraiser.
“It’s one of our biggest events,” said executive director Don Adam. “We’ve raised between $18,000 and $30,000 in the past and we’re hoping to reach $30,000 again this year.”
All proceeds from the June 19 event will be used to support the 12-to-18-year-old residents of the non-profit home, which is a provincially accredited children’s mental health facility.
“It has certainly changed over time … but it has always been on Father’s Day because of our boys,” Adam said.
“Not all of our boys have fathers and all of our boys are survivors.”
In addition to the longer bike rides, the event offers 10k race, 5k fun run, 5k walk, 7k skate and 7k bike routes.
The routes begin and end in Mike Weir Park and a sausage and pancake breakfast is provided for all participants and volunteers.
