Sarnia’s cycling event of the year has been derailed by COVID-19.

Bluewater Granfondo organizers say they scrubbed the Aug. 2 event because of uncertainty over ongoing restrictions and the need to ensure the safety of participants, volunteers and the community at large.

“This was a difficult decision and we know this will come as a disappointment to our stakeholders and the many cyclists looking forward to this world-class event,” they said in a release.

The Granfondo, which starts and ends at Mike Weir Park and attracted 900 cyclists last year, has been rescheduled for Aug. 1, 2021.

Money raised supports St. Joseph’s Hospice and the palliative care unit at Bluewater Health, as well as an annual palliative care conference in Grand Bend.
