Improvements to Sarnia’s oldest baseball field are headed to the bottom of the ninth. Backstop and netting are complete at Errol Russell Park and its field, says the city’s manager of recreation and planning, Ryan Chamney.

Contractors are expected to complete masonry work and a bleacher access ramp by mid July, he added.

Sarnia Braves officials were consulted in the $1 million reconstruction of the park, which is used by several age divisions of the organization and for high school baseball.

Maaten Construction began rebuilding the Devine Street facility last summer, tasked with adding a new field house, accessible washrooms, small concession area, storage space, a utilities room and partially covered bleachers.

The 6.8-acre property was renamed Stan Slack Field in 2016.
