Another warm weather sports option is coming to Sarnia.

St. Catharines-based organizers Paul Barbas and Vytaa Daraska will run the Sarnia Outdoor Ball Hockey League this summer at a new outdoor rink at Hiawatha Horse Park.

Barbas, who has family ties to Hiawatha owner Jim Henderson, struck a deal to run the league at the recent 3-on-3 tournament at the London Line location.

The sport has taken off in the GTA and Golden Horseshoe region, he said, and there is no reason why it shouldn't be successful here too.

"It's great to play outdoors in the summer time," he said.

The league hopes to attract players four-years-old and up, including men's, women's and co-ed teams with a minimum of 11 players per team.

"What we're looking at is (playing on) Saturdays and Sundays, beginning on May 31," said Barbas.

"Kids would play in the morning beginning at 9 a.m. and the adult games would begin in the afternoon and go until about 7 p.m."

Winning teams in each division would have a chance to advance to the provincial championships, but Barbas sees the league as more recreational than competitive.

Interested players can register on Sunday, May 25 between 12 noon and 3 p.m. in the go-kart building at Hiawatha. Cost is $129 per player, or $1,250 per team plus HST.
