Free seasonal flu shots are now available from local pharmacies, community clinics and health care providers.
Influenza is one of the most communicable diseases and spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, or touching infected surfaces.
Flu season normally runs from November to April.
Last year, more than 25,000 vaccinations were administered in Sarnia-Lambton. It takes about two weeks for full protection to kick in and they provide protection for four to six months.
“Despite best efforts to protect themselves and their families, people can’t always protect against germs carried by others,” said Erin Courtney, supervisor with Lambton Public Health.
“The best defense against influenza is a flu shot.”
Those at high risk of flu-related complications include the elderly, infants and young children, pregnant women, indigenous people, residents of long-term care home and people with chronic health conditions.
