Golfers Matt Hill and Mike Weir were among 15 Canucks in a field of nearly 250 international pros entered last week at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville.

Hill earned his spot after winning the regional qualifier at Blue Springs Golf Club in Acton last May. He won the 2009 NCAA Division I championship while at North Carolina State.

Weir, best known for his 2003 Masters win, continues to battle wrist and elbow injuries. The Huron Oaks-trained golfer appeared in just seven tournaments this year but is enthusiastic about the state of Canadian golf.

“I think it’s great that we have more Canadians that are in the mix, more guys that are on tour and more guys with chances to win,” he told Sportsnet.

“It’s good to see guys playing well. For years there was not many of us with a chance to win at this event. Now there are a lot more.”

This year’s Canadian Open boasting a $6-million purse.
