The Vidal Street walkway has closed permanently and will be decommissioned, the city has decided.

The walkway beside the Donohue Bridge spans the CNR train tracks to the U.S. Until being closed temporarily for safety reasons it was both a pedestrian crossing and a utility corridor for Union Gas, Bell Canada and city water main serving the Chemical Valley.

Replacing the span would cost $2.2 million, so the city has opted for a utility-only bridge costing $1.4 million.

Pedestrians heading to and from Campbell Street to Vidal Street South have been redirected to use the west side of the Donohue Bridge.
