The United Way has set the bar high on this year’s campaign.

The target of $1.92 million announced last week is a new benchmark for the agency but is doable if the community works together, said campaign chair Richard Kelch.

“We believe that we have set a realistic goal for our community in 2014, given the fact it was the amount we reached last year.”

The 2013 target was $1.87 million.

United Way of Sarnia-Lambton raises money for 22 agencies that provide 35 programs and services impacting the lives of thousands.

The campaign officially kicks off with the annual Day of Caring on Sept. 16.

Kelch said hitting the target will require donations from 5,350 people, including the growing ranks of retirees.

“The need in our community is great,” he said, adding, “If you have given in the past, we ask that you give again.”
