More than 50 students from 16 schools squared off in competition at Sarnia’s annual spelling bee on March 4.
Jack Vrolyk of Errol Road Public emerged victorious in the Grade 7-8 division by correctly spelling “auditorium” before a full house of parents, siblings, friends, educators and grandparents at the Sarnia Library Theatre.
Second place went to Taren Snauwaert, also of Errol Road.
In Grade 5-6, Ryan Pinel of St. Matthew Catholic correctly spelled School “unconscious” to edge Kate Baresich of Brooke Central.
And Mackenzie Willis of Errol Road nailed “definition” to claim the Grade 3-4 division title. Dayla Picard of Lansdowne Public was second.
The event was organized by the Organization for Literacy in Lambton and sponsored by the Sarnia-Lakeshore Optimist club.
The winners and runners-up received trophies for their efforts.
The champ in each category also advances to the Southwestern Ontario Optimist Spelling Bee slated for April 18 in Petrolia.
