Sarnia residents will receive hydro and water bills once a month starting in January.

The switch from bi-monthly billing was ordered by the Ontario Energy Board to ensure uniform and consistent billing across the province.

Sarnia contracted out its water billing to Bluewater Power in 2011. Since then, the utility has converted to “Smart” meters, which don’t require staff to visit homes and businesses to read electricity meters.

Nevertheless, Bluewater Power has renewed its contract with the city for another four years to bill consumers for both water and hydro charges.

Electricity meters will be read remotely while the water charge will be estimated on the off month between readings.

Sarnia will pay Bluewater Power $738,000 for the service in 2017, the same as this year plus a modest increase for inflation and customer growth.
