Health officials are advising local residents to report any raccoons seen acting abnormally after five raccoons tested positive for rabies in the Hamilton and Haldimand-Norfolk area.

It’s the first time confirmation of raccoon rabies in Ontario in a decade.

The virus hasn’t be seen in Lambton County, but pet owners are advised not to let dogs and cats roam free and to ensure their vaccinations are up to date.

To report any wildlife behaving strangely call the provincial rabies hotline at 1-888-574-6656.
