Police looking for suspect after apartment robbery

Sarnia Police

Police are searching for a suspect and reminding residents to use caution with unexpected visitors after a woman was threatened with a knife and robbed in her Sarnia apartment earlier this week.

Sarnia Police say officers responded to 811 Devine Street on Wednesday, April 3 at 6:40 p.m. for a robbery that had just occurred.

“The 23-year-old victim resides in an apartment at this address and is prescribed opioids for a medical condition,” police said in a news release, adding that a male suspect had knocked on the apartment door, indicating there was an emergency outside, and asking for help.

“The victim answered, at which time the male held a knife to the occupant’s stomach, demanding her prescription medication. She provided a quantity of her medication and the suspect fled on foot.

“The victim was visibly shaken but not injured.”

The male involved is described as white, approximately 5’11” in height, with a slim build, and has medium length brown hair. He was wearing a black jacket, dark boots.

Anyone with information or security footage in this area at this time are asked to review it and contact Sarnia Police. Tips can be submitted anonymously to Crimes Stoppers at 519-332-TIPS (8477) or online at: https://www.p3tips.com/tipform.aspx?ID=314

The Sarnia Police urge citizens to use caution when opening doors for unexpected visitors. Please follow the following advice:

Trust your Instincts: If something has you worried do not open the door and call the police immediately. If there truly is an emergency you will be calling the police regardless.

Peephole or Door Viewer: Utilize a peephole or door viewer to see who is outside before opening the door. Ensure it is installed at an appropriate height for easy viewing.

Door Chain or Latch: Install a door chain or latch to partially open the door while still maintaining a level of security. This allows you to communicate with someone outside without fully opening the door.

Digital Peephole Camera: Consider installing a digital peephole camera that provides a wider field of view and potentially records footage of visitors.

Intercom System: If available, use an intercom system to communicate with visitors before opening the door. Verify the identity of the person before granting access.
