At least one piece of good news has emerged about Centennial Park —Suncor Energy plans to sponsor the new outdoor stage currently under construction on Sarnia Bay.

The company has committed $250,000 in funding to enhance and improve the stage facility and its surrounding area.

City council was expected to approve the sponsorship agreement this earlier this week, which would see the stage area named the Suncor Agora.

In ancient Greece, the agora was a city’s central public gathering space.

“As the City of Sarnia prepares to re-open the park to the public we certainly feel the name embodies the role the gathering space will once again play in our community,” said Mark Hiseler, vice president of the Sarnia Refinery.

A public announcement and unveiling of the 12-year partnership agreement will be part of a special ceremony planned for Centennial Park on June 17.

The Centennial Park and Everything Ontario and Canada Event will showcase the park’s new amenities and feature bands and activities, with open ceremonies at 12 noon, as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations.
