A little-used Afton Drive park is about to become an active soccer pitch again.

Sarnia’s GallaDev Soccer Academy has received permission to use Woodstone Park for its boys and girls soccer programs.

The field will be rolled to level out the grass and existing nets moved from a children’s play area, city hall says.

Woodstone Park was originally a soccer field built with proper drainage. But organized soccer was nixed there in 2008 after new housing created parking concerns.

The Academy has arranged to use parking at a nearby church, and Afton is now signed “no parking” on one side, allowing access to emergency vehicles.

Meanwhile, drainage at the Germain Park soccer fields will be improved, allowing play after heavy rains.

Sarnia FC partnered with the city on the redevelopment of Norm Perry Park, and $91,000 of the unused funds will used at Germain.
