Kids dazzle us with science

Organizers are expecting another display of brainiac power at the Lambton County Science Fair.

The number of student entrants has increased every year since 2008 and it’s possible the April 11-12 fair will be the biggest yet. What’s more, the quality of prior work ranks the county among the nation’s elite.

“Past entries from Lambton have brought back top honours at the Canada-wide event proving that, for our population size, we are one of the best in the country,” says organizing committee member Peter Smith.

Few local schools still hold their own science fair, but the countywide event at Lambton College has been a regular on the spring calendar for the 41 years since it incorporated, and it operated for years prior to that.

The fair is open to all students in Grades 3 to 12, and provides them with the opportunity to pick their own project topic, to research the subject and perform their own experiments, and to present the results to a panel of judges.

Projects are judged by age group, with cash prizes totalling more than $5,000 awarded. The best projects in the intermediate and senior categories also get the opportunity to go the Canada Wide Science Fair, held May 10-17 in Windsor this year.

“It’s a great opportunity for students to explore the world for themselves and to meet with others who share their fascination with science” said committee chairperson Stephanie Lobsinger.

Further details and registration can be found at www.lambtoncountysciencefair.ca. Registration closes April 4th.
