Thirty-three volunteers spent Sept. 29 cleaning up three Sarnia beaches by picking up 51 pounds of garbage and thousands of cigarette butts.

The effort, part of the Great Canadian Coastline Cleanup, saw workers pick up debris on Baxter, Modeland and Blackwell beaches.

The next step comes in November when native dune grasses from Pinery Provincial Park are transplanted to the city.
