Amy Bladon of the Bluewater Gymnastics Club is heading to the Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Ottawa in May.
The 12-year old captured a silver medal in the Floor Exercise in the National Novice Division at the Ontario Gymnastic Championships in Windsor.
She also finished in the top seven on Uneven Bars, Balance Beam and Vault events ,and placed sixth overall in the All-Around Category.
Lexi McCormack , 14, placed second in the Uneven Bars and sixth overall in the 14 and up category, just missing a spot with Team Ontario for the upcoming Eastern Canadian Championships in Oshawa.
Serena Baker, 16, was fifth in the vault in the National Open Division. She came within a fraction of a point of placing in the top three.
But, the clubs success didn’t stop with the older, more experienced competitors.
Jovie Richardson won silver in both the Uneven Bars and Vault events in the Pre-Novice Aspire Category, while Rachael Riley finished fourth on the Uneven Bars, missing the bronze medal by one-tenth of a point. The third member of the Aspire team, Shea Skinn-Wai came within a whisker of finishing in the top ten in both the Vault and Uneven Bars competition.
In the nine-year-old category, Hayley Tarboton and Madison Gabel both finished less than one and a half points behind the all-around champion in their age group, and Jaelyn Cole was within a quarter of a point of placing the top ten in the Uneven Bars event for 10 and 11 year olds.
“It’s good to have a lot of new kids competing,” said Bluewater Gymnastics Competitive Co-Coach Liz Brubaker. “These younger divisions help them to develop for higher levels of competition in the future,” she added.
Overall, the club won four medals and came very close to a handful more. All nine of Bluewater’s athletes finished in the top 15 in at least one event at the Windsor competition.
“It was a good experience for the girls,” said Brubaker. “They all had really good meets and hit all their events.
Meantime, two of Bluewater Gymnastics most famous alumni are at the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships this weekend (April 18-20) in Birmingham, Alabama.
Dominique Pegg is on the roster for the host University of Alabama Crimson Tide, while Talia Chiarelli is on the University of Michigan roster.
Alabama and the Wolverines are ranked third and eighth respectively heading into the championship event.
