Point Edward is getting it’s own butcher shop.
Davy Jones Quality Meats intends to open a second local location at 519 Helena St. once the necessary permits are in place, its owner says.
“It’s been an idea for about 20 years now,” said Kyle Deloof, who began working as a teen in the meat department of the store at 1030 Confederation St. before becoming its owner.
“I got looking at it and said, ‘This is a perfect location.’”
Unlike the original Davy Jones, which also sells general groceries, the new Point Edward location will specialize only in meats, said Deloof, 35.
He considered a full grocery store but concluded the investment was too risky and opted to stick with what he knows best, he said.
“This is a passion for me. I love the butcher shop, it’s kind of an art, really.”
The Point Edward location, once a pet grooming business, will be gutted and renovated. Plans call for a 650-foot addition to house refrigeration and freezer space, bringing the total size of the store to about 1,700-square-feet.
The new business will create four new full-time jobs and one part-time position, he added.
Davy Jones Meats celebrated its 25th anniversary on Nov. 5 and if all goes well the second location will open in April, he said.
In addition to traditional meats, Davy Jones stocks unusual cuts and varieties, such as tomahawk steaks, frog legs and alligator meat.
“Stuff people aren’t expecting,” Deloof said with a smile.
