Workers from Imperial Roofing secure the damaged cross atop St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, moments before Mammoet Crane lifted it to the ground beside Christina Street today.

The cross was bent over by fierce storm winds that also broke trees, damaged roofs and stripped the top from the Duc d'Orleans cruise ship on July 18.

Officials are now determining the best way to repair the copper-encased cross. When it is returned to its rightful place overlooking Sarnia from a height of 146 feet the shaft will contain a photograph taken during Thursday's lift, said Wayne Dennis of Imperial Roofing.

“Then if they open it a hundred years from now it will be like a little time capsule inside."
